Why I Chose to Become an Educator

I have been in a classroom for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my mother and aunt both taught early elementary. I was very familiar with the ins and outs of education because I was used to hearing them tell day to day stories and classroom experiences. I was very intrigued with all education had to offer, that I soon began to possibly consider becoming a teacher myself. I knew that I wanted to be in a career that impacted society in a positive way, but I was not sure if education was the way to pursue that dream. The summer I turned eighteen, I took a job at a local daycare. Although I have always loved being around children, I was indecisive on taking this position because I was conflicted on what career path to choose.

Little did I know, I would fall in love with teaching young children after my very first day of work. The way their faces would light up when they built a LEGO castle, or how they would jump with joy when they finally learned how to tie their shoes, led me to believe that elementary education was where I was meant to be. We soon turned into a family and shared an unbreakable bond. I worked with these sweet children up until the year I started Jacksonville State University. Although I was their teacher, they taught me more than I could have ever imagined teaching them. To see the world through a child's eyes is to see everything in its beauty. I hope to have this same connection with my future students. I want to be a teacher who instills kindness and love into all who enter my classroom. I want my students to know that they are worthy and that they can make a difference.
